Punks | London | 1973
The Punk subculture emerged in the mid 70's as a result of boredom due to lack of activities for adolescents. Punks are typically white, male teenagers from working class or middle class backgrounds. Although Punks are largely male dominated, girl punk bands such as The Slits emerged and the punk community expanded. Since then female punks have always played an important role in the punk scene.
Majority of punks often hold minimum wage jobs or are unemployed. A number of punks are homeless or rely on squatting. This is a result of recession in the 70's. Discrimination against appearences made matters worse when it came to getting a job.
Music
Music is the most important role in the punk movement.
Punks typically use short or fast-paced songs, with hard-edged melodies and singing styles, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishmet lyrics. This is a reflection of teenage rebellion and angst.

Fashion
Punk fashion consists of theatrical use of clothing, hair styles, make up, jewellery and body modifications. Tartan, distressed denim and metal embellishments were the biggest trend. The trend is very "DIY". Vivienne Westwood was the biggest and most known fashion designer during the punk era. She basically invented the whole punk look. She designed clothes and styled the Sex pistols. Even her current collections still have elements of punk.
